When we design a part, some simple changes can save the machining cost of the part. So knowing the design and how a mechanic operates will help you save a lot. As a professional processing plant, Xiehe will share this knowledge with our customers.
Here are some tips on what to know about designing cost-effective CNC machined parts.
The main communication channel between you and your engineers is technical drawings. To make it easier for them and save money, spend enough time on the drawing. This means that you must clearly communicate in your drawings what you want to see on the final part, here are some characteristics of the documentation you should provide:
1. Make sure the text is thick enough to read. Make sure the lines are dark and avoid colors like blue, light gray, and yellow. Text becomes difficult to read when you fax or scan light-colored documents.
2. Mark your parts in a unique way to avoid the possibility of confusion, you should also be specific about the material and finish to be used.
3. Explain to the engineer what the part is for and how it will be used.
4. For complex parts, if possible, provide 3D modeling and 2D documentation to the machinist.
5. Pay attention to how decimals are used when giving dimensions. The mechanic will use the default number of decimal places.
Machining Design
When you consider how your part will be machined, it makes your pocket and your engineer's job easier.
1. Design to ensure that your design will avoid the possibility of end mill chatter.
2. Make sure to avoid designing parts with corners that are the same size as the diameter of the end mill.
3. In order to reduce costs, when designing complex parts, design multiple parts, which can be connected together after processing, because it is cheaper than processing one complex part. This is because a complex part involves a lot of risk to the mechanic.
4. In order to ensure the strength, the depth of the hole should be about 1-3 times the diameter.
Setup and Fixtures
For proper clamping, the following factors must be considered:
1. Designed in a way that allows the vise to be fixed. For this, the part needs to be possible to be clamped in the vise, that is two parallel sides.
2. Another type of gripper is the soft jaw gripper. It requires additional processing steps but is still cost-effective.
3. For parts that do not need water cooling, the use of double-sided tape is a good fixture, and the tape requires a large surface area.
4. Avoid multiple setups as much as possible, parts with a single setup cost less than parts with multiple setups.
