1. Turning
Turning involves clamping the workpiece firmly to a rotating plate or mandrel. As the workpiece rotates, the tool is held in a fixture mounted on a moving slide. The slide can be moved up and down the length of the workpiece, either close to or away from the centerline, making this simple operation ideal for quickly removing large quantities of material.
In addition, drills mounted on the tailstock of lathes can drill precise holes; lathes are used to form concentric shapes on the outer circumference of circular parts; lathes are used to create grooves, annular grooves, shoulders, internal and external threads, cylinders and shafts - Many round or round features.
2. Milling
The fundamental difference in milling is that the workpiece remains stationary while the cutting tool rotates on the mandrel. The workpiece is usually held horizontally in a machine vise and mounted on a table that moves in the X and Y directions.
The spindle accommodates a variety of tools and moves along the X, Y and Z axes. Mills are used to create squares/flats, notches, chamfers, channels, profiles, keyways and other features that depend on precise cutting angles.
As with all metalworking operations, cutting fluids are used to cool workpieces and cutting tools, lubricate and wash away metal particles or chips.
3. EDM
Solid EDM is used to create pockets, holes, and square features in hardened tool steel that would be difficult, if not impossible, to manufacture any other way.
Commonly used in injection and die-casting molds, rarely used in the finished part itself. EDM is also used to create textured surfaces or debossed (debossed) letters and logos on molds.
4. Grinding
Grinding to create a very flat surface on metal parts is important for many applications, and the best way to create such a precise surface is to use a grinder.
The grinder is covered with abrasive grains of specific roughness.
