Five-axis CNC machine tool overview

The 5-axis machining center has a variable-speed tool spindle head with multi-directional rotary axis orientation. Raw material is clamped into an indexing chuck or table. The spindle head assembly moves along the travel column along with the chuck or indexing table to precisely manipulate the workpiece and cutting tool to achieve the correct toolpath required to remove material. The 5-axis machine offers a single setup, unlimited geometry cutting, excellent chip management, longer tool life, repeatable manufacturing, and the speed of simultaneous 5-axis high-precision machining. As with standard milling and turning type machines, this is a subtractive manufacturing process.

5-axis machine anatomy

1. Rotary Spindle Head - Variable Speed Spindle accommodates a rotating tool that travels along the Y axis (front to back) and rotates along the B axis

2. Cutting tools - machine tools cut material from a workpiece to form parts - subtractive manufacturing

3. Moving the column - Z axis (left to right) and X axis (top to bottom) make the rotating spindle head and the tool move on it

4. Spindle - The main chuck that holds the workpiece, can rotate at up to 2,500RPM on the C-axis and can move on the Z-axis

5. Sub-spindle - An auxiliary chuck that can rotate at up to 2,500RPM on the C-axis and can move on the Z-axis holds the workpiece
